BPCSD Sells Historic School Street Alternative Building
The Broadalbin-Perth Central School District has sold the former Hamilton-Fulton-Montgomery BOCES Alternative High School building to a Broadalbin couple interested in developing senior housing there.
Broadalbin-Perth Superintendent Stephen M. Tomlinson said the property sold for $99,500, which was what the district was asking for. He said the district will realize an approximately $20,000 additional savings because the property cost money to maintain and heat in the winter.
"In such tough financial times, it's very nice to be able to relieve ourselves of one more financial burden," he said. "It cost money to care for the building and keep it in good condition."
Tomlinson said he's pleased the new owners expressed interest in turning the facility into senior housing.
"I believe they'll be good owners who will respect the surrounding community," he said. "Senior housing is much needed in our community."
Village Mayor Eugene Christopher said he has not met the new owners. Christopher said the School Street site is ideal for senior housing.
"It's right in the middle of everything," he said. "It's within a block of the post office, the bank, the library, the market, the pharmacy. They can make a little circle and get to everything. It's all within walking distance."
Christopher said he's glad to hear about the sale, especially since the village has been hoping the building would sell for several years. The village changed the zoning on the building to residential to make it more attractive to potential buyers.
Village Clerk Sheila Bleyl said the addition of the building to the tax rolls will benefit village residents. Bleyl said if the property is turned into multiple housing units, it will lower the village's sewer rate. She said the sewer cost is divided by the number of equivalent dwelling units in the village. The more the units, the lower the cost.
"It won't cause a huge drop, but it will affect it," she said
